September always feels a little like “New Year” - back to school for the kids and back to work for the grown-ups.
Of course in January there’s the whole “new year resolution” and “new year, new you” thing, but that’s not to say that you can’t decide to approach the last 4 months of the year with the same attitude!
I’ve worked in the corporate world and now I run my own business, so I really understand the importance of goal setting, mindset and dressing for success when it comes to achieving your dreams.
Here’s my guide for going back to work in style!
“If you don’t have a dream, how’re you gonna have a dream come true?” as the song goes. If you don’t have goals, you won’t achieve them – and most likely you’ll get roped into helping someone else achieve theirs.
Your goals can be as big or as little as you want – they’re your goals. If you want a promotion, put it on the list. If you want a complete change of career, put it on the list. If all you want is an office chair with wheels that actually work, put it on the list!
But the thing is, it’s not enough to write your goals down once and hope that you’ve achieved them by December. You need to regularly review them and take action. There’s research that showed that millionaire wrote down their goals daily – and that billionaires write down their goals twice a day!
Another way to help you reach your goals is to create a vision board. Cut out pictures from magazine or print out from the internet and create a collage to place somewhere in your home that you will see it every day – this will remind you of your goals daily. A Pinterest board would also work, but evidence has shown that physical boards are more effective at helping you to achieve your dreams.
If you don’t like your job it’s easy to wake up each morning with a negative attitude, go to work in a grouchy mood, spend all week wishing it was Friday night and then spending all day Sunday dreading going back to work on the Monday morning.
The problem with a negative mindset is that it’s more likely to keep you in a place that you don’t want to be than if you decided to be more positive about your circumstances.
Goal setting, as I mentioned above, is the best way to help you adjust your mindset and put you in a more productive place emotionally.
Other practices that can help include mindfulness, meditation and just a good old workout or run (bonus points for getting your frustration out through boxercise!)
Dress for Success
Marilyn Monroe said, “Give a girl the right shoes, and she can conquer the world" – and I totally agree! Looking smart and stylish is about more than just fitting in – when you look good you feel good, and clothes which are well tailored and appropriate for the situation make you feel powerful and in control, and that’s the kind of energy you put out which, in turn, people respond to.
I’ve picked out a few pieces from the latest S.W.A.L.K. collection to help to put your best foot forward this autumn and really rock your career goals!
When building a power outfit, always start from the shoes up. These cropped black skinny trousers by SOYACONCEPT are perfect for showing off your stilettos.
Fashion insiders consider “leopard” to be a neutral, and therefore this ICHI leopard print shirt is a fantastic way of subtly showing some personality in the office (it’s also a piece which can easily be dressed up for after-hours drinks).

If you don’t have the budget to splash out on a Hermès Birkin (and let’s face it, who does?), then this Military Green Silvian Heach Bag is an excellent alternative. Smart enough to show that you mean business, but big enough for all your girly bits (and if you’ve ever wondered what stylists carry around in their handbags, take a peek here) – it’s an essential in any #bossbabe’s wardrobe. (Also available in a larger Chocolate).
