City Break Packing Guide

City Break

Who doesn’t love a city break?

It’s the perfect time of year for a quick schlep over to Paris, Rome, Madrid or, if you’re really lucky, New York!

However, you don’t want to spend half of your precious weekend stood by a luggage carousel waiting for your suitcase to appear, so a carry-on is essential.

But – what to pack? Space and weight are severely restricted in a cabin bag but looking great at the top of the Empire State Building or posing by the Trevi Fountain is non-negotiable.

Here at S.W.A.L.K. we’ve totally got your back, so we asked our team of stylists for their advice on how to pack for an autumnal city break – and here’s what they had to say…

  1. Before you start to pack, plan out the weekend’s activities, e.g. shopping, sightseeing, theatre, dining at a fancy restaurant. This will make it much easier to decide to take with you.

  2. Jeans are so versatile and one of the easiest things to pack for a weekend away. The beauty of jeans is that you can dress them up or down depending on the activities you’re doing. For a day look, wear them with high top converse sneakers and a sweater top, as comfort is key through the day; and then for night time switch to a smart top and blazer, and add some nice stylish ankle boots and a bit of bling!

  3. The weather at this time of year is unpredictable – warm & sunny one minute and then cold & drizzly the next! The best way to get around this is to pack layers to put on or take off throughout the day. The other benefit of packing layers is that they give you plenty of “mix & match” opportunities, so you get multiple outfits with the minimum number of pieces.

  4. Make sure you leave space (& weight!) for accessories! Brooches, necklaces, hats and scarves can really give your outfits an extra edge and can transform a simple daytime dress or t-shirt into an evening outfit. You could also jazz up your daytime bag by tying a silk scarf around the handle, giving you a smarter look for the night time.

  5. Always include a versatile coat, and make sure it goes with everything you’ve packed. Even if you’re headed somewhere that should be warmer than the UK, it’s still a good idea to take a raincoat or a thin jacket – you can wear this on the plane to save space in your suitcase!

  6. A slick of red lipstick is a fantastic way to change the look of an outfit, especially if you’re going for a sexy vibe – and adds next to no weight to your luggage. Treat yourself to a premium brand at the airport and et voilà – très chic!

  7. City breaks are all about walking – whether you’re romantically wandering hand-in-hand by the Seine or frantically trying to visit every single museum in Florence in 48 hours – so making sure you’re comfortable is vital! Wear a stylish and comfortable pair of sneakers to travel in and during the day, and then pack a cute pair of ballet pumps (a nice metallic colour such as bronze works well at this time of year) and / or a pair of sexy heels.

  8. Audrey Hepburn said “Happy girls are the prettiest”, and she’s a lady who knew a thing or two about making the most of a city break (check out “Roman Holiday” for some inspiration!), so don’t worry too much about how you look – just make sure you’re having fun!
